Review: The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down: How to Be Calm in a Busy World

The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down: How to Be Calm in a Busy World The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down: How to Be Calm in a Busy World by Haemin Sunim
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It is a 3 star read for me.
Haemin Sunim’s The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down aims to be a gentle guide toward mindfulness, inner peace, and emotional clarity in a fast-paced world. While the book has been widely appreciated for its calming tone and bite-sized reflections, for me, it ultimately fell short of its deeper promise.

From the very beginning, the book launches into prescriptive advice, what to do when you’re feeling sad, anxious, angry, or overwhelmed. However, I found that the book’s simplicity often bypassed this depth. Instead of creating a space where readers might feel truly seen and understood, the tone sometimes leaned too quickly into “do this, not that”, which can feel more instructive than empathetic.

When a book claims to be about empathy and inner peace, it becomes crucial that its language carries warmth and emotional resonance. Unfortunately, many of the passages felt detached to me, as though the words were offering help without first acknowledging the full weight of what someone might be experiencing.
The book is not without its merits. Some quotes stood out with quiet wisdom.

But to me personally, it felt lacking in warmth.
